Best to install via ftp if your wordpress install unable to unzip and create folders

ok
I’ll upgrade the theme via ftp. But I have anothet question about that.

Will it ask me the license code again after I put the upgraded theme file in ftp.

Because I used the licence code once on http://www.urbanista.com.tr as my IT worker said to me. But I didn’t note the code somewhere I can find. And I can’t ask him cause we don’t see each other anymore. (as you know, he bought the theme for us)

What’s your suggestion?

See the docs – link right side of page – on how to update theme and plugins. FTP is the best way. Welcome to WordPress!

Hi @supersheek,
*Always make a backup before any changes

Your actual custom css are here: Theme panel / CUSTOM CODE / Custom CSS.
You have to cut all code is there (after cut have to save theme-settings) and paste it into the style.css

2 ways for do it:

  • through FTP (downloading style.css and attaching that code at the bottom of the file / upload and rewrite the new style.css
  • through WP dashboard / Appearance / Editor / Style sheet (style.css), at the bottom you can paste it. / push the botton “update file”

*Always make a backup before any changes 🙂

Love the theme!

I have an issue with search results that include pages though.

Pages that I’ve built with the visual composer have a string of characters above the content that goes off the side of the page. How can I remove those characters? Can I hide pages from search (not ideal solution)?

Here’s an example: http://1f1.b0d.myftpupload.com/?s=glenn

Thanks!

Hi

Try to deactivate all plugins except Visual Composer, clear all caches then test the site again and check if the problem is still there.
Please follow pour documentation to update the theme via ftp: https://forum.tagdiv.com/newsmag-install-via-ftp/

Thanks!

Yes I have 2 valid licenses. Urbanista.com.tr has licence but it doesn’t do updates automatically.

By the way since 3-4 days it does’nt show anything on “update” site. There’s just a white screen on that part.
I can’t update wordpress either.

One more question: How can I update my theme with FTP?

Hello,

The best way to do it is indeed through FTP as Chris mentioned (Thanks Chris) You simply need to delete your old theme and then add the new theme files in the wp-content/themes folder.
The update script needs to be activated after you update the theme. Please note that you will also need to update all your theme plugins (visual composer, revolution slider, social counter). They are all included in the theme package.
There will be some elements that will have to be replaced or re-created as lots of things changed since newspaper 4

Thank you!

Hello planetcappe,

I have checked your website and I noticed that everything seems to work as propelry, as you can see here -> http://screencast.com/t/2WeGAWZAXL4P -> http://screencast.com/t/TKxXoMUfTpd I did not saw any problems with your theme. Also, if your problem will reappear, please try to disable all the active plugins, leave just Visual Composer to active, clear all your caches and install only the plugins that come bundled with our theme and rule out any conflicting plugins.

Hope this helps and let us know how it goes!

Thanks for your understanding!

Hello ironsea,

If you have two valid licenses, you can download the latest version of the theme without any problems on your side. We recommend doing the update via FTP because this is the surest method in this regard.

Thanks.

Try via FTP to rename your plugins folder xplugins.

This resets/disables all your plugins so you might be able to login.

Note, before doing any updates *always* check for issues, like Yoast 3.6 has problems. Just because “an update is available” doesn’t mean you need to do it NOW. Also good to turn off automatic updates to avoid “sudden breakage.”

And keep copious backups.

Well, if there is malware, back doors, porn spam, etc. in the pirate version … uh, yeah, it probably will hurt your site — having no idea “where” the “friend’s copy” came from ?

You do realize this is the same as installing pirate software on your PC, there are many files, php codes, snippets, javascript — all of which can be damaging to your site if malicious.

Have you scanned your site with SECURI yet ?

https://sitecheck.sucuri.net/

Reinstalling WordPress is pretty quick if you know how to FTP stuff — unzip the clean WP installer from WordPress.org ( not from ‘a friend’ ) and then drag over all the pieces to your site “over-writing” the existing files … just to do quick safety check vs doing nothing at all. Replacing the default twenty-sixteen theme with clean version, deleting ALL other plugins and themes, is a wise choice.

Have you done anything at all, like research this on Google — it’s your site, only you can fix it if something is broken from using “borrowed” software. Theme devs can’t fix that for you.

http://www.wpbeginner.com/plugins/how-to-scan-your-wordpress-site-for-potentially-malicious-code/

Hopefully lesson learned!

Hi again @rayarasmussen,

If you haven’t made any modifications into the theme files (css, js, php), you will not lose anything.

All modifications/customization through theme panel settings, like for: header, footer, posts, translations, etc., etc., … and all your content, never are going to lose them because they are recorded into the data base (DB).

When you want to update something, allways before make a backup/copy from all your files + DB (if something goes wrong you can revert).

It is not advisable to use Envato Toolkit for updates, I think he has received some bad feedbacks! Take your time and learn how to use FTP (File Transfer Protocol), is very easy, free and will greatly help in the future. You will have access and control to all your files from server.

Use the search bar in this forum, you’ll find 99% answers for your Q.

Hello,

I am using WPthree Broadcast to broadcast my blogs to 12 subsites.
It is using a queue which is fired using cron.
This works fine.

Except for blogs containing video.
According to WPthree Broadcast this is because wp-admin/includes/media.php is loaded too late.

This is the error code:

Error: <b>Fatal error</b>: Call to undefined function media_sideload_image() in <b>/home/users/ftpuser/domainname/wp-content/themes/Newspaper/includes/wp_booster/td_video_support.php</b> on line <b>197</b>

Could you please make sure that wp-admin/includes/media.php is loaded before calling that method?

You should fully delete the pirate version your friend apparently had — I may be mistaken, but best to be safe; and do clean install of WordPress to be safe. Do it via FTP, so you can delete old versions of theme folders (all of them!), old plugins (all of them!), and do clean full install of WP. Seriously.

simchris

Note that they answer tickets in order received; so posting updates actually pushes it back further in queue; oops, I did that too.

Basically, install theme and plugins via FTP if you have permissions issues on your hosting setup (where WP cannot remove/delete stuff in folders); this way you can *see* what is actually there, remove broken install, and do clean install of theme; this is very often the issue where something broke on server when WP was unzipping the zip file, and now can’t delete it due to being messed up. It happens 🙂

Try FTP upload/install — best way, every time!

Hi

I cannot duplicate the issue on my end, I’ve added a self hosted video in post content and works fine on full width mode. I’ve made the test wit V 3.1 of Newsmag. Try to update the theme again following our documentation: https://forum.tagdiv.com/newsmag-how-to-update-the-theme/ also update the social counter at V 4.1 which is included in theme’s path and setup the plugin according with our documentation: https://forum.tagdiv.com/newsmag-tagdiv-social-counter-tutorial/ , clear all caches, purge cdn files if you’re sing then test the site again.
Let us know how it goes and if the problem persist please send us an email at contact@tagdiv.com with your login credentials, also give us ftp access, and we will inspect this issue as soon as possible. In your message include a link to this topic.

Thanks!

Hi,

Please use this guide to update your theme and choose the ftp method: https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/

Thank you!

Oh sorry – if you were to look at the files behind your site via FTP, you’ll probably find a folder somewhere near the top:

public_html

Under that you should find:
wp_content/themes/Newsmag

In that folder, you should see a file called style.css – this file contains pretty much all of the Themes base css code. The lines are in there. Make a copy of this file, modify it and that should be all you need to do.
