Hello,
Thank you for your kind words. We are happy to see our hard work is appreciated.
You can see a method to use excerpts in those modules/blocks by following this topic: https://forum.tagdiv.com/topic/block-9/
Or if you prefer not to edit the theme files and just use css in the theme panel there is also this solutioin: https://forum.tagdiv.com/topic/placeholder-image-2/
I will add your request to our list and if more people request such features, we will consider them for a next update.
Thank you!

Hi there – how is it possible to have one category (in this case – Editorials) to have no featured image … so that on the category page, on the author page etc there is no thumbnail or image, even a placeholder image.

I’ve tried work arounds with some custom css and display: none code but that gets really hard on category pages etc.

Thanks – Neal

Previous themes I’ve used for my newspaper had the option to automatically set the first image in a post as the featured image. Newspaper doesn’t seem to support this. I’ve installed a plug-in that should provide this functionality, but it still doesn’t work — unless I manually select a featured image, I get the placeholder image as the thumbnail in blocks and category pages.

But oddly, I also get *two* images in my RSS feed — the featured image, and a thumbnail of it. This is a problem because MailChimp parses the RSS and send it as an email summary to readers.

Any suggestions?

Hello, I have a very similar issue, but with the 324×160 thumbnail images. If you look on this page: http://demo.tagdiv.com/newspaper, at a browser window of 700px wide, for example, you’ll see that the thumbnails are being scaled up more than 2x. This of course makes them blurry, especially on a retina display. Example here: http://www.screencast.com/t/OxsmYbpo0xYw

These 324×160 thumbnails are also displayed in their ‘normal’ resolution on a full-width page, instead of 2x which would make them sharp on a retina display. Example here: http://www.screencast.com/t/Rf9E5vdpqT

If the featured image is not uploaded, then the theme shows either a placeholder or nothing, and that is not what I want.

Do you have a suggestion for how to show double-density images as thumbnails?

Thanks and Happy New Year!

Hello Barun,

As I can see in your screenshot, you have used a block with featured image. Unfortunately, there is not a simple option to align your text to left if you do not have a featured image. You cannot change dynamically the structure of the block. Another alternative would be to use others blocks without feature image, for example, Block 9 -> http://screencast.com/t/NZOkX7nb5 or block 10 -> http://screencast.com/t/spl5jkzoYJH2

http://screencast.com/t/F9B5aEw2vtEhttp://screencast.com/t/qlwTvoRmFh

Also, you can set that when you do not have a featured image to display a placeholder with a favorite image of yourself. If you want to change the placeholder, you need to replace another image here: http://screencast.com/t/FsRu4SpqD1F

For to know what kind of thumbs are used in your blocks and modules, please check this: http://screencast.com/t/rjXsO7Wo4iaG

Hope this helps and let us know how it goes!

Thank you for the message!

Hello

I have a frontpage top (BIG) grid chosen with 3 placeholders. Instead of post, is it possible (and how) to assign only images or Pages. I have tryed to work around this in editing Big grid in VC FILTER (Post Type). But cant get it to work.

Obviously, this is to use the grid as a welcome – static presentation. I noticed, that it is not possible to hide author/date/counts from just one category, wich was my first solution limiting the category to the BIG grid to only having one category in filter with 3 post. Forever.

..:-)

Thank You and again, it is a fantastic theme to work with.

My other option is BOX21 and it can display with placeholder image BUT,

I get an error when I have this enabled:

td_api_base::mark_used_on_page : a component with the ID: thumbnail is not set.

Hello,
You can use jing: https://www.techsmith.com/jing.html and make a screenshot for us to what you are referring to. There are also other methods. Just google ‘how to make a screenshot’.
You can disable the placeholder image from here: http://screencast.com/t/ygehySUv7A

Hi,I was using Style 7 as default post display without any problems.
Now, after the update, there is a problem with images filling in the placeholder area and no parallax effects as well.

What’s wrong?

Hi,
I want to remove the placeholder image (theme panel / post settings / featured image …): no Problem, it is working. But than the text should start at the beginning of the line (without white space). Is this possible?

I have created a png image identical in size to the current placeholder in my image/nothumb directory and then changed get image() function to the correct path and image name. The problem is that the image does not appear, the placeholder image is now blank. My intended result is for the posts without featured images to display my logo as opposed to the current default image. I have the most current Newspaper version 6.6.

Here are the instructions I followed: https://forum.tagdiv.com/search/placeholder+image/?td-theme=newspaper_6

Hi @teodormiu

Thank you for your kind words!
1. Try this guide and regenerate the thumbnails for all your images: https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-fix-strange-thumbnails/ clear all caches and test again. If the image is large enough it should be displayed fine in thumbs.
2. If a post doesn’t have a featured image set the theme load a placeholder image when this option from theme panel is enabled: http://screencast.com/t/qXc9ADVOzKOf To set a custom image you need to add an image in /images/no-thumb directory: http://screencast.com/t/VBrS8hN53 then replace in get_image() function the name of the image like here: http://screencast.com/t/CYZRDHlJs
3. In order to identify the ideal/average size you need to figure out which is the largest container that will display that particular image and upload an image bigger than that container. Then there is the post template to consider. If you use post templates with big image backgrounds (style 6, 7 or 8), then your uploaded image has to be bigger (especially on style 8). You need to asses your website’s layout (posts and block elements) and come up with an average image size that will work on smaller containers but also keep good quality on bigger ones.
You can read more about thumbs and featured images here: https://forum.tagdiv.com/theme-thumbs/https://forum.tagdiv.com/featured-image/https://forum.tagdiv.com/thumbnails-vs-featured-image-size/

The theme uses thumbs to reduce the page size and speed up page loading time. From each image uploaded are generated thumbs for each thumb size used by the theme. Basically when a post it’s displayed on the page in a block, the featured image displayed is not the one which you uploaded in media file, it’s a thumb cropped from the original image at precise dimension. To change the picture orientation most likely you will need a different cropping system. We use a WordPress function – add_image_size() – you can read about it here – https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/add_image_size – and here – http://www.davidtan.org/wordpress-hard-crop-vs-soft-crop-difference-comparison-example/

Hope this help.
Thanks!

Thank You Andrei

Quick follow up:
Will it be possible via this method to get specific Category/Tags post-image to the one BIG image in grid, so this stays here, (if I dont post anymore in that category/tag), or dos it apply to all 5 placeholders in the grid as one, which I then cant control?

Thank You

Hi

I chosen a top grid with 1 big and 4 small placeholders.

Is it possible to reserve these 5 placeholders to specific category.

That would give me the opportunity to keep the 5 grids sticky, using the 5 post and their featured image, as a “landmark” for the website ?

So new post would only get to the 5 placeholder grid, If I chose it composing.

Please advise

Thank You

Hi

If a post doesn’t have a featured image set the theme load a placeholder image when this option from theme panel is enabled: http://screencast.com/t/0EyWnezDRJb You can set a custom image if you want, but it be loaded in all pages, not only in category page. To set a custom image you need add an image in /images/no-thumb directory: http://screencast.com/t/bIQdJo24bHF1 then replace in this function: http://screencast.com/t/eMg8ysBwfWm1 the name of the image like here: http://screencast.com/t/vSFA7UnhRWOd

Can I simply replace the theme’s placeholder image to accomplish this? If so, where is that image located and what size should it be?

Hello stuntfm,

Unfortunately time does not allow us to test every single plugin with our theme and i cannot give you a specific answer to your problem, but you can try to disable the featured image/placeholder either in the theme http://screencast.com/t/kQMaC14o or from the plugin and see how it goes.

Thank you.

Hi,

@euzebius
This is how it was designed if you don’t have the a featured image the placeholder thumb will appear on modules. You can disable it from Theme Panel > Post Settings – http://screencast.com/t/ugfP0rr0mTln but please note that some blocks may need the thumb as the css may be applied on it.
Or you can replace it with your image like I suggested above.

Thanks!

Hi,

Thanks Chris!

@euzebius

I can’t seem to solve or make progress on my Newspaper Theme performance issues.
I’ve got five friends that want to use Newspaper, too, if only I can get past my performance issues.
(They’re new bloggers, they like the idea of the theme, they’re a bit worried about my inability to fix my performance issues, or to find someone who can.)

My performance sucks (in the 40’s) with no clear remedy in sight.
Worse, when users hit my site the first time, the page loads blank (no images show)
If they reload the home page, then images show the second time, but after a flash of gray.

Here are screen shots:
* Empty Images – http://www.awesomescreenshot.com/image/509260/1ae034f2ac380576a5dd1d8e49faed92
* On Reload – http://www.awesomescreenshot.com/image/509262/dd0893dd0a1944de6aab6f0a9591e297

I haven’t seen anybody else’s site load like mine, where it’s all framed out with gray placeholders, and then, as if a second flash, the images then show up.

Here’s my setup at a glance:
* I’m hosting on Siteground.
* I use WP Rocket which is tested with Siteground — just default options.
* I’m using a CDN (Cloudflare), with default options.
* I have Gzip working.
* I use WP Smush Pro to smush all images (all images are smushed.)
* I used P3 (Plugin Performance Profiler) to analyze plugin performance.

I contemplated W3 cache (well, In installed it, but it was immediate conflict with WP Rocket, and WP Rocket’s feature compare shows superior in all regards, but I don’t have enough experience yet to know of it’s true.)

I get Chris’s point on the difference between buying a car, and driving the car. Well, now I want to know how to drive like the Mario Andretti. I feel like I’ve got the “owner’s Guide”, but not the “Driver’s Guide”. But actually, I don’t want yet another guide, I want a student driver model where I pay a consultant to show me the ropes for a couple of hours while fixing things, looking over my shoulder, or me looking over theirs.)

My images are probably the main problem, I don’t know how to fix them without doing weird acts of God, and I’m trying to keep posting simple and pragmatic, not build a better mouse trap with weird optimizations and even weirder workflow.

I’ve seen these tips:

* Radu – On the demo we are running a stock theme with our stock speed booster plugin! Also note that any additional plugins slow the theme down and lower the score in pagespeed. – https://forum.tagdiv.com/topic/what-is-your-googlespeed-value/

* Pingdom Tools – reality test – http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/#!/bGth8K/sourcesofinsight.com
* Web Page Test – http://www.webpagetest.org/

Google tells me my page speed sucks. Is Compression Working tells me Gzip is working. Pingdom tells me my images are bloated. GTMetrix fails with a 522 timeout and blames my CDN.

“Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”

I guess I’m getting stronger day by day.

Hi,

Please make sure that you do a clean install of Newspaper 6 like it is suggested in the documentation – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/ as no old theme’s files should remain. Please note that Newspaper 6 is practically a new theme, all the code was rewritten and the old customizations(files customizations, custom css) will not work anymore. These are the files(placeholder images) used in version 6 – http://screencast.com/t/VyL1J1WWM8Jv

Thanks!

Hi,

These: http://screencast.com/t/b5lmlUeh2lUG are the featured image placeholder’s and in order to have the featured image display on modules/blocks thumbnails you have to set it for each post from here: http://screencast.com/t/yTlOLmmg0yN or you can use a plugin that automatically sets as featured image the first image you place into post’s content. You can use one like https://wordpress.org/plugins/autoset-featured-image/ or similar.

Thanks
