thanks; was afraid of that. I don’t want to use visual composer for anything in posts/pages, but it might be okay for the home page. Not a big problem or anything. 🙂

After 20 years of web development I’ve come to NOT want to rely on any plugin or framework too much as things come/go then don’t work anymore, etc. So, for example I still have posts from early days of WordPress where the tags were inserted at bottom with [tags ] … well, when that changed, I now have couple of years of content with bracket tags at bottom of posts.

Visual Composer is not a bad thing to standardize on as a theme seller, however since I’ve got websites that have been around longer than 90% of the web, I’ve gotten a little jaded on things. I ended up standardizing on Bootstrap for a lot of things, as they did excactly what we were doing around here of having small batches of code we’d re-use for things like accordions and tabs, and whatnot; and they put it all together, so that was great for us since it was pre-packaged and had classes all set for use.

I also used shortcodes for buttons years back, theme dev went DOA with WP3, now all the buttons were [button] and don’t work. So, not going to trust that for anything tied to theme/or VC. Color me paranoid 🙂

Right now I would not want to use visual composer for posts in any way as if they go under, in 5 years, my sites would have 5 years of broken elements, and I’ve seen that happen too many times now to “rely” on that for anything other than, say, the homepage or category page tops — as you’re very nicely doing, hence my adoption of the theme(s) you’ve been doing.

For example, I would not use shortcodes to change colors, create tables, or anything like that in a post.

I’m not sure if WordPress has a built-in responsive table class, but if not, that would be something GOOD from Bootstrap 3 to keep in your own framework as it was a nice solution for having a table that couldn’t entirely collapse become a fake inline frame with horizontal scroll. I guess I should actually play around with it. 🙂

In any case if you have a cheat sheet for your icon font to be able to use in content, similar to FontAwesome spans, that would be super cool. 🙂

And yes, having a more flexible grid for the layouts than how bootstrap does it, is great for the borders, and boxes, and all that. Nice job!

Awh see that’s what I mean. I don’t only want two columns in a fullwidth layout I need that option also when a sidebar is present on the post.

I’m really hoping future development will allow a more flexible grid indeed.

I did find another very flexible solution with a wp plugin called “Custom Backgrounds for WordPress” here:

Lot of additional features/options to it, and gave me exactly what I was looking for… the ability to apply a single background to all posts.

Of particular interest, though not sure if I will use it for this feature or not, it also has the ability on each page to select a custom background for that specific page.

Thanks Lucian. The CSS works but we are still not able to control the font size. In your previous CSS can you include a specific font size? We copied your CSS in the CUSTOM CSS area. Do you want to put it inside any specific page template for more flexibility?

You can still use CloudFlare just don’t use there “CDN service” but there is a lot more nice features that come with them,this week they giving FREE SSL Certificate to every one site that use they service..

The team at CloudFlare is excited to announce the release of Universal SSL™. Beginning today, we will support SSL connections to every CloudFlare customer, including the 2 million sites that have signed up for the free version of our service.

For all customers, we will now automatically provision a SSL certificate on CloudFlare’s network that will accept HTTPS connections for a customer’s domain and subdomains. Those certificates include an entry for the root domain (e.g., example.com) as well as a wildcard entry for all first-level subdomains (e.g., http://www.example.com, blog.example.com, etc.).

For a site that did not have SSL before, we will default to our Flexible SSL mode, which means traffic from browsers to CloudFlare will be encrypted, but traffic from CloudFlare to a site’s origin server will not. We strongly recommend site owners install a certificate on their web servers so we can encrypt traffic to the origin.

Later today we’ll be publishing a blog with instructions on how to do that at no cost. Once you’ve installed a certificate on your web server, you can enable the Full or Strict SSL modes which encrypt origin traffic and provide a higher level of security.

I asked the UberMenu developer for some more concrete help/advice, this is what I just received. Maybe you know what to do with this info?

“The basic idea would be to use Manual Integration to just place the menu where you want it. You’d place it inside the header.php within the proper container – either inside the .td-menu-header div to make it the width of your content, or inside the .td-menu-background div to make it the full width of the screen.

But generally it’s a better solution to get the actual structure right, as it’ll be more flexible.”

Yeah, basically some new features, house cleaning; a lot of wp configuration tools under the hood; but not the big “security panic” updates of some of the recent dot revisions. But always check the codex to see changes, since if there is a notable security fix you SHOULD update to remain secure.

1. I haven’t seen a way, but it is a little flexible; it seems to crop a little when it executes the resize. The original demo images are not actually all the same dimensions before being resized, e.g.:

2. The homepage is a regular WordPress page that gets marked as the front page in the WordPress settings (under “Reading”). You could have the other pages look like it by editing the homepage, switching to classic mode, copying all the shortcodes you see there, and pasting those into a new page. Then switch to the backend editor on the new page and tweak from there.

we try to keep the SEO the same for all pages.

if you ask me I wold go with Visual Composer pages because it give you some flexibility when displaying your content, the downside of this is that you have to do the pages manually.

The Newspaper Ad spots plus WPBakery gives me plenty of flexibility for now. Later, If I need to custom code some spots into the theme I’ll work with a developer.

I’ve been sidetracked the past week trying to sort out the random issues with Amazon’s CDN where randomly the font awesome CSS won’t load in IE11 or Firefox on Windows, leaving unstyled elements on our business site; and now the background for one sub-head divider won’t load the background image when using either ../assets/img/filename.gif or the full explicit URL in style sheet. Makes no sense. Went back to loading the FA2 fonts from our own server. Sigh. (This applies to our business site, not the magazine sites; the business site doesn’t use WP for main content, so a bit more flexible; pages are static to begin with so full page caching not needed, obviously.)

As to the WordPress stuff… we’re not using a true “page cache” yet, just the mod_pagespeed caching of page “elements” and not yet using a CDN for the CSS/JS. But this page is not bad; testing a typical article page sans a YouTube video or the AdSense elements but with AddThis in place to see how at least one “pagespeed stumbler” impacts ratings.

So, 1.29 seconds without page cache or CDN is pretty much not bad as starting point for us, which I could live with before the “next level.”

I’m not yet doing anything further until the new version of the theme drops from Radu’s magic labs.

Apparently for our WP sites, we’ll likely end up using “Varnish” on the server, to manage static pages locally, in front of mod_pagespeed, which peeps tell me is “how it’s done.” That is what is going to get the pages loading in the sub-second range. I may retry the caching plugins for WP to save local copies as I think mod_pagespeed can rewrite the pre-cache or post-cache copy, but still unclear on that. Not sure what Varnish will do to our ecom system or other stuff, so having enough fun with one thing before suffering another.

In the meantime I deactivated the social butons in the Theme Customizer, then activated the ShareThis plugin with pretty much the same visual effect as the Newspaper buttons, see autoproduco[dot]it/costruire-una-libreria-con-cassette-della-frutta/

I don’t like that plugin a lot as it adds lots of scripts, but it appears a bit more flexible than Addthis (allows to deactivate the buttons on pages) and shows the count of share/tweets/etc exactly as the Magazine one.

Looking forward to see something similar in Newspaper!
