Ok i have reuploaded the Newspaper theme via FTP, and it is installed.

I have not tried to activate it again though as the same thing will happen.

A clue here; there is a problwm with the live Preview – it doesn’t work. When I press live preview, it tries to load again with the small grey circular icon for a split second then everything goes white.

IS it possible there is no style sheet maybe? ( i dont know much about this stuff)

Ok, I have deleted the theme via ftp and reactivated a base them.

What should I do with this theme now? Any ideas why this happened?

Stand by on this. Seems FTP client is hung… Looks like it grabbed the 3.5 -> 3.6 update instead. Rebooting and checking settings and will update if that was the issue.

I have disabled all plugins through ftp by renaming the plugins folder.

The Homepage Loops Filter Posts per page is set to 5

The Setting > Reading – “Blog pages show at most” is also set to 5

As you can see at http://betheline.com/dev/ there are more than 5 posts showing.

Any help is greatly appreciated

I’ve been an award winning graphic designer since a teenager in the 70s, have design award from Apple (!), widely interviewed in the press (Entrepreneur, Chicago Sun Times, etc), used to write monthly column on web design a decade ago for Digital Imaging, Micro Publishing News, Graphic Artist Guild; started building websites 1995, SEO and ecom 1996, built Oprah Winfrey’s ecom solution (and hosted it) for her “Begin with Love” video series; CEO of a design and publishing company, webdev, seo, PR, marketing, etc. Was on annual judging panel for PRSA “Excellence in Tech Journalism” awards. My websites generate 10 million page views per month. Some stories have gotten one million views for ONE story, in one week. Most sites have been online for 15+ years.

So, upshot my time is very valuable and I work huge hours and am involved with thousands of pages of content at any given time (google ‘Neotrope’ or ‘Send2Press’ to see what I mean).

But since you asked:
I often multi-task on my two 23-inch Apple cinema displays; and during the day I often have to do multiple things at once, like waiting for a bunch of things to FTP, waiting for mailing list system to run, run ecom system optimizations and backup, wait for client reply to do a same day project. Talk on phone to clients, etc.

So, I often have some “free time” where I check in on technical issues which may impact my business, from Heartbleed bug, PCI-DSS compliance, or support forums for the various commercial products I use.

Or as I stated to begin with:
....offering some help to others to pay forward all the help I’ve gotten over the years on stuff where I was pulling my hair out.

This means that I’ve been lucky to get help from many others over the years on stuff simple and complex and unsolvable without a forum poster saying ‘go look at this dummy’ and then I figure it out. A LOT OF WEB STUFF HAS CRAP DOCUMENTATION. There are whole websites in the webdev world just for this kind of thing …and I’ve had numerous issues with my ecom platform (NOT woocommerce), or issues with our dedicated servers which I would never have been able to sort out without help form somebody on a forum when the company tech support was clueless.

So, the time I’ve put in here has been to HELP others … to pay back the help I’ve gotten from so many over the years. I also pop in to the forum for my ecom software, have provided feedback to Yoast on bugs in his programs (e.g., beta of the news addon, issue with the twitter account field, etc.), and various other arcane things related to the web dev world.

For the average joe running a blog, that person doesn’t often have time or inclination, or sometimes the braincells to FIGURE IT OUT, which some of us do as matter of course. So, folks like me who post back some tips, tricks, or stuff that tagDiv might not even know, is useful. I’ve been managing WordPress sites daily since Jan 2006. I’ve learned more than a few things.

So, this is where the term “paying it forward” came from.
Pay it forward is an expression for describing the beneficiary of a good deed repaying it to others instead of to the original benefactor.

I think you can remove unwanted/un-used thumbnail sizes by editing functions.php

One trick is to regenerate thumbs with small/medium/large set to the sizes you want in theme to avoid duplicates.

One plugin can regenerate thumbs from first image in post, when files are uploaded via FTP, which is what we do on most of our sites. I’ve recommended it a few times and I should be getting a kick back for how many people have bought it by now 🙂

Worth a try.

You might try accessing the admin panel in http://yoursite and https://yoursite – as those are different ports. If your site runs in https, then accessing the admin in http might not work correctly.

Still, I’ve not seen this issue before. It may be firewall setting on your PC.

Obviously 8880 and 8443 should be open, and port 80 might be needed, possibly 443. However these should already be functional.

Sorry I don’t have a better answer. You may wish to utilize a process viewer or port monitor to determine WHICH ports are supposedly trying to be accessed on your PC and what are not able to connect on your network. If you’re hosting your own domains at the University, checking the error logs for your site are also a good starting point.

Also good idea if having any issues with widgets to simply go to each and press “save” again. I tend to do this out of paranoia with each new full dot WP update:

1) resave permalinks (habit as it resets/touches the htaccess file which as the rewrite rules)

2) disable and re-enable plugins one by one; check for any error message on re-enable.

3) run wp-optimize plugin which cleans house on orphan meta, etc.

4) do tools > save all site data (if not already done); good to do before AND after any update especially if “database has been updated” happens with the upgrade.

5) once a month I do full FTP download of site in case server catches fire and datacenter hit by lightning and backups melt.

6) Check site in IE11/Win7-64 and Chrome/Win7-64. (Generally if it works in Chrome on Windows then Chrome, Safari and Firefox on Mac will work – and who cares about anybody still running IE on Mac!)

7) If needed for anything like missing widgets, go to appearance and just hit “save” and it resets it. For missing ads, simply hit “save” in the theme panel for each ad spot.

8) Finally, out of general paranoia I also look at the source of a sample post, to make sure the meta tags are not messed up due to the occasional whack-a-doodle bug in Yoast, and because we’re running mod_pagespeed and like to check things are not being re-written in some bad way.

Veteran WP users have their own checklist, but this may be useful to the newbies. 🙂

gzip/deflate is managed at the web server level – it needs to be running for your hosting account. This allows the web server to automatically compress everything sent by the web server from your site to the web browser. This alone is good for 20+ points. This is the #1 thing which should be addressed. Ideally your web host should have this on for your account. If they won’t enable it, move to another host who will!

If you look at my posts there is an example of the .htaccess settings that I used for
the “expiration headers”

For images:
1) you need to use a compression plugin, like smush.it or similar (see comments from others in the thread); this will optimize all the thumbs created by WP and the theme
2) upload well compressed images (e.g., 25-40kb max, not 150kb or 700kb — unless you’re doing some kind of photo/portfolio site where quality is first concern)
3) consider changing the compression level by default in WP, which is done in the functions.php file at bottom using the code I’ve suggested in my posts — setting it to something like “60” vs the default “90” (I think), will cut the size of the thumbs by a huge amount.

For my particular brand of magic, try putting this at the end of your .htaccess file:

NOTE: if you use pingback or post by email, don’t put in that last 3 lines, as I do this to keep spammers from posting comments via pingback even when comments are off (!).

The above assumes your web host is running Apache, and not IIS, or nginx or other. If so, you might have to tweak those for your particular host. Apache is the most common, however.

Also: make backup, via FTP, or your hosting panel fileManager of your .htaccess file first; then if your site doesn’t load with the new elements, put back your original version.

I am pretty easy to find online. I added a note on my profile, that I’m not the tech support to call (I’m not the droid you’re looking for!) 🙂

Anything you can do for the resizing would be awesome.

The issue we have is essentially something like this:

1) we have mothership >>> pushes out news to our state/local site hubs
2) the local site pulls in both local versions, and national versions (news not from that state); so state news from the mothership goes into the main site content, featured on home page; national news is secondary, not featured
3) since the image for local news items are uploaded by FTP, not media manager, we use a theme running timthumb to auto generate the thumbs around site and featured homepage; for national news, timthumb grabs the national news item photos hosted on the mothership (external images) and builds the local thumbs for national category index and side of page (sidebar) stuff
4) so, when moving to something like newspaper, which needs a “featured image” – we can use Auto Post Thumbnail PRO to at least get the “first image in post” (whether from local FTP or external hosted mothership for national items) to the featured image spot/field.
5) so… now how do we get larger image for the featured categories and homepage when the root images are 500×375 and need minor increase? Normally timthumb — not possible with modern themes. Hence the issue. We’re not the only one with this kind of thing. And so my “will pay you big bucks” to solve for us, as we need to move to a modern theme away from Woo Canvas which replaced our old in-house theme. Canvas works, but has none of the micro-data, tricky stuff, modern menus, blah blah.

It seems we can solve the set first image in post with the commercial Auto Post Thumbnail Pro, but then the hangup is getting larger versions of those images for the featured boxes/layouts. We can’t start with GIANT images, for various reasons related to syndication, systems loading the images dynamically on their own sites, as well as images clients have, and/or “best fit” for layouts on news portals.

And we don’t want to do “width=100%” kinds of things, as we’d get tons of “you should be using actual size images…” warnings for pagespeed insights.

Anyway………. epic poem at an end.

Anything you can come up with will be most welcome. This is the last “need it!” issue which WP should have as option but they are opposed to for their own philosophical reasons and because the code is also used for wordpress.com (sigh).

Heck, if you solved it, you could probably offer a commercial plugin for it. Or offer an “Newspaper Enterprise” edition for $100 that included the feature. Those of us who need it, would pay, since we’re not part of the “free economy” whining about not getting 40 hours of free training with their $50 theme 😉

I did as you advised. I completely removed the entire Newspaper theme via FTP and then did a clean install with v3.6 thru FTP.

I am still experiencing the same problems as listed above.

*I’ve installed Disqus onto the theme and it works great except the comment count. (Sorry auto correct on the phone).

Is there anyway to change the code in the Theme Settings, or would i need to do it via FTP? If so, what file would i be looking for to change? (.php? line no.?)

Purpose of caching is to serve the PAGES very quickly. As per the note in the docs, you should use “page cache ONLY” to avoid issues with things getting cached you don’t want to be static for a long long time. Others will likely provide more detailed answer, but the simplest one for using W3 is here in the docs:

You can, of course, “experiment” with caching with any theme/site – it’s your site. But, you don’t want database cached or updates wouldn’t be loaded on indexes or front page.

But best to err on side of paranoia. Also be sure to do full site backup before enabling any cache plugin. And make sure the plugin is running at same user permission level as the ftpuser vs the server/apache as that was a big implosion of doom on one of our sites!

That may not have been perfect answer.

If only happens with IE10/11 I would not be so worried.

But it happens with all browsers and before reupload all theme files via FTP this never happened.

I’m waiting if Marius or Radu can clarify this.
