Ideally you should have back-up of all your images, as standard practice before installing anything or running any plugin which changes content.

However, you can simply re-run the regenerate thumbnail plugin to the sizes you were using before. But read the help info that comes with the plugin as it describes the best way to use it, how to “un-use” it and so forth.

I believe the “cropped” setting is in the theme panel; so you should “uncheck” that, and then re-run the thumbnail regen plugin to see if that fixes things.

It’s also useful to set the default small, medium, large settings in the main wordpress > settings > media … to limit number of thumbs actually built.

If the files are too big (in KBs) you can also use my hack in the functions.php file (search forum) to reduce the file sizes created by about 40%.

@Christopher Simmon, Thanks for the response. I don’t have any SEO plugin installed, i’ll do some further plugin research (I try limiting them for speed purposes). I’ve done my research and I saw that this code would work: <meta property=”og:image” content=”image-url”/> and I put it in the header but still seems to be pulling the wrong image (nonetheless its the worst image it could grab, ah). Anybody else experience this/resolved this problem?

I just upgrade to Newspaper 3.5 and attempting to replicate this, with
Newspaper/includes/modules/td_module_1.php

if I remove the // for author name, it’s NOT printing on the posts although uncommenting on other modules does add the author byline to things like the sidebar modules or the indexes.

I have tried with tagdiv speedbooster on/off; I have mod_pagespeed off to ensure nothing is being cached; not using Jetpack.

This is CLEAN install of Newspaper 3.5; meaning the theme folder was uploaded as fresh folder and prior 2x folder was not over-written, so no mish-mash of old/new theme elements. No child theme being used.

Any idea why that might not be printing on page? Do I need to enable something else to cause the author byline to print on posts?

To repeat past posts as an opinion here:

“Byline” is one of the most critical things to all newspaper/magazine sites and should always appear below the title of article, or below the featured image; but typically the author and date are shown together in magazines and newspapers, so slightly annoying we still have to manually enable this EVERY update — look at TIME, or NY Times, or LA Times, or CNN, you will see the BYLINE and date top of every article. SO my big REQUEST would be to enable this by default “ON” and then let people comment it OFF which would be the exception vs the rule.

Just want to share my two cents, I am a non-coder so couldn’t do any technical stuff. When I installed Newspaper, my pagespeed score on GTMetrix was 43. I realized there was some hack in my php files, so cleaned them up bu the speed reached only around 48.

I changed host from Site5 to KnownHost with SSD drive and extra RAM. The reading did reach 75-80 with that.

Following this I installed P3 Plugin Profiler and found out that Jetpack and Yoast SEO (1.5.x.x) was eating 90% of the total plugin resources. I unisntalled Jestpack; it was useful plugin but not indispensable.

I also removed Yoast SEO. The decision was easy as I felt it didn’t improve my SEO. Yes, I said it! I know how big a name Yoast is, but it didn’t work for me. May be I didn’t use it the right way but hell I would rather not use what I don’t know how to use and the cost opportunity was too high as speed was important to me.

Be sure you’re only uploading the main theme folder “Newspaper” and not the big folder with all the docs and help/how-to.

You should look inside the folder you’re uploading to
/wp-content/themes/

to make sure it has the style.css in there, which would be good indicator it’s the wrong folder.

The “Newspaper” theme folder is the one which has the folders bbpress, images, includes, js, less_files, parts, translation, wp-admin, wpbakery, as well as about 35 loose files, including style.css and 404.php, etc.

I have the php code to call for it, the plugin is installed.

How do I add an element bellow the bottom ad?

Tried to place it Single.php just bellow the closing of

and no results. Any idea? how to get this done?

Well, I keep everything up to date, I updated to the latest version of the theme and of the plugins that I use (that include jetpack, Yoast SEO and W3). Nothing else was changed on the server, it’s a DV from media temple so resources are not an issue… And also allocated more memory to the install (256MB) and nothing… Now the problem is also in another site were the backend is slow as a snail.

Any help? Very much needed…

I find a solution, please share with other if they have same problem.

1.- Install Advance Text Widget Plugin
2. To call “tubepress” short code don´t use this: [tubepress], you have to use

This is the only way I could make this works, if someone has same problem, this is the solution.

TagDiv, I don´t know why this happens but I recommend that we could use php on default text widget to avoid installing other plugins.

TIP:
1) do updates via FTP if you can
2) we’ve had nothing but problems with the envato “theme updater” – I recommend avoiding it unless you are very savvy in doing full backups of your site via FTP prior to running the plugin (in which case you wouldn’t likely use it anyway)
3) FTP is always best because you can a) make full snapshot backup of your site files, including images, themes, core WP files, config, htaccess, etc. – and also do a dbase backup via WP Admin > tools > Export (all); b) upload files so you know they are properly uploaded

CAVEAT/CAUTION: if your site has ownership permissions where files/folders are “owned” by Apache/server and not the ftpuser, then you may NOT want to use the FTP method for updates. If you are unable to replace your theme folder due to being “owned” by Apache, you can rename the theme folder, then upload fresh copy by FTP which would be “owned” by the ftpuser and not server. You can view “ownership” permissions of your folders by going to your hosting > filemanager > public root > files … “who” owns the folders will be shown in that application.

And YES, you can upgrade from 3xx to 3xxxx without first installing 3xxx.

New to FTP? Good to learn. Filezilla is free and open source way to get started.

first of all disable all the plugins that you have installed, conflicts may happen between plugin and the theme.

for the second issue, when adding a post you can add it in what categories you want:

the featured image is handled by wordpress, there is not much that we can do about it.
