Yes it is possible to update from 7.2 to 9.7.2 directly. Just make sure that you have a backup of your website first. It is mandatory to delete all what was left from the older version before intalling this update.

2. That is becaue you have the Mobile Theme plugin from the theme panel active. The Mobile theme was specially designed for optimization on mobile devices. Unfortunately on mobile theme you cannot do much changes of design. If you want to have the same design as on desktop mode you can achieve that by simply disabling the mobile theme.

The theme does not have this implementation, to show different ads based on category page or by post. Maybe you can achieve this using a plugin. Some of our users use the AdRotate plugin to manage their ads and it seems to work properly, you could give that a try and see if it suits your needs.
