Hi, sorry, yeah, somebody else thought that continuing to use VC would “demolish tagdiv theme sales and they should switch to something else” — or something like that.

Of course, VC has a nice product, but the past six months it’s become a memory hog, and as you and I have experienced some core issue just whacks certain servers (and we have dual XEON CPUs and 32GB RAM on dedicated premium box … not a VPS or something ….).

Anyway…. try the version of VC you were using previously, for editing.

You can modify how images are “cropped” — but you will need to “hack” some settings; there is no consistent way to ensure all images are “cropped perfectly” as all are different — as are all photos. So, some might get top chopped off, some might get bottom chopped off. To have images be “perfect” for all shapes and sizes of thumbs you would likely need to create your original images very carefully to have appropriate spacing on all sides so you end up with a “safe area.”

For example you could edit the functions file in the tagdiv booster folder to change the default crop direction for a specific thumbnail size following the settings for WordPress, as found in the official docs … e.g., you could have “crop from top, left” or “crop from bottom, right” .. etc.

TagDiv can point you at the right file to edit in the theme folder, to experiment with.

Block settings are not included with the Newspaper theme; nor advertised to have them, nor shown in the demo; but will be supposedly coming in Newspaper v5. Obviously you can’t somehow “add” that admin panel from another theme to this one — doesn’t work that way. However, that feature most likely will be in Newspaper 5 coming next month (hopefully). Remember theme docs for Newsmag do *not* apply to Newspaper — two different themes!

The theme is already responsive, just like demo, meaning mobile users see different version of page than desktop users.

Perhaps you could be much more specific in describing what you hope to achieve?

You can activate the “style” from the theme styles, but you still need to setup your home page however you want it to look and choose your content/categories to feature — no way for theme to know what categories you might have created.

Don’t use the “demo content” unless you’re just demo’ing for client; all that junk doesn’t help you with your own site content — just makes a mess of it.

Take a look at theme docs (link right side of page).

Normal practice would be:
1) install theme
2) use default style, or use the style import option
3) create blank page
4) build your page layout using Visual Composer; possibly create custom sidebar to use widgets on front page.
5) set your page as the static front page from WP settings
6) adjust page to tweak and fine tune

Fun to experiment. You can always do a working page, make that live. Then start new blank page and tweak that, then switch to that new version once completed the way you want it.

Not that difficult, but you do need to setup your own front page, obviously.

The theme all of a sudden is broken. WordPress is telling me that the ‘template is missing’.

I attempted to edit the style.css as you suggested and the theme broke.

Here are the steps I took.

1 – I logged into cpanel and navigated to the newsmag theme folder. Copied the Style.css and moved it over to the child theme folder.

2 – Navigated to the child theme folder and attempted to edit the style.css. My browser crashed.

3 – I attempted to edit the style.css file from within wordpress and wordpress gave me a message that the theme is broken.

What did I do wrong? How can I fix this?

You don’t get all the “demos” choices switcher popup from left side … that is just to show different demos on themeforest — it’s not part of theme.

You can CHOOSE a theme style by going to theme panel, and import styles at bottom to choose the ONE style you want to use for your site. So, you can switch between styles to choose which *one* you want to use on your site — and even just go back to default.

See theme docs link right side of this page as good starting point! 🙂

You can edit ‘catgories’ names from the WordPress settings left side under posts>categories — basic WordPress settings.

You can change menu items from appearance > menus.

Note demo content is just there to help demo the site; normally you would NOT use the demo content and start from scratch and then choose a “style” like “Fashion” and then customize that, then add your own content for testing and customizations from theme panel.
