When you mouse over the categories in the menu, it is showing a slider with featured images and then the sub-menu options below the slider. I do not want to show a slider when you mouse over the categories. I just want to see a list of selectable sub-menu categories. I disabled the slider using edit categories, but that did not disable the slider when you mouse over the menu categories. I realize that I could just not have featured images, but that would mess up the big slider that I am using.
Also, please let me know how to add a print button to posts. I thought it was a sharing option, but it does not show up as a sharing option.
Thanks.
OKAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Definitive update on this topic!
Since I have brand new blog (2 posts!) which I setup this weekend, as a migration of an old static section of business website, to a new folder using WP and Newspaper, I was also having issue with Google+ not grabbing photo+summary, and instead only grabbing my author photo + URL or headline.
So, here’s what I did.
I switched from the full width giant photo (style 4), to style 2, with featured image shown; still same problem.
I switched “show featured image off” and *ALSO* switched off the lightbox feature since I don’t use that — remember Google doesn’t like images which are links as they by default presume them to be ads not featured photos when scraping — and then placed my featured image into both of my new posts, and resaved both.
Viola. Went to share both on Google+ and both of my posts from new blog setup dropped in instantly into G+.
example… works!
https://plus.google.com/102627062589158403110/posts/a39F9Lrpa8t
I am not sure whether it’s the featured images outside of post, since I don’t have problem with that on another site with Newspaper; but I am guessing it’s the lightbox under the post settings being on by default that may be the culprit. So try that FIRST (click to off), and see what happens with your G+ shares.

Issues can usually be traced to one of the following:
1) robots.txt file blocking access to uploads folder or custom image folder
2) images too large for featured image; sometimes social media systems hiccup on very large images; especially if over 25kb
3) googlebot using scrape method vs meta data for image (very common); but cannot determine best image when featured image is background element such as full-width image; this is why you sometimes see author photo or local hosted ad banner as selected image; this is why “wrong image” is shown; Google is grabbing from a related image on the page, which is not the featured image. This is because the “classic” Google parser went for the first image in the post body 100% of the time and ignored the meta data which hints the right image to use. I’ve theorized that from time to time they fallback to that system and ignore all image meta data. This is still used by Google News, for example — scraping and not using the meta data pointer to image to use.
4) google image bank overloaded; deferred; try again next day or later
5) google having hiccups parsing page unrelated to theme; issue with only grabbing photo and URL; or no image at all, or wrong image
6) facebook image grabber sometimes blocked due to their annoying ping of your web server to do geolocation and many systems like CSF will start blocking the IPs that Facebook uses, hence why you get no populated elements at all on sharing to FB; host / server needs to clear temp firewall blocks to clear up
Be aware Google has been doing massive changes to their network in August, due to phasing out author image and G+ data in SERPS, finally updating some things like the Google alerts page which was 5 years old, now updated; and long line of things changing post Panda 4.0 and Google changing their priorities for G+. How many G+ hangouts have you heard about lately? (None.)
We deal with couple dozen websites, mostly news portals updated daily with image and original news items, and run into all sorts of bizarro things with G+ lately. This usually clears up. Note that I more often see the problem with WordPress sites than non-WP sites, which is an indication there is some inherent issue which is unrelated to any specific theme, but not quite sure what it is.

So, another week and another issue has presented itself.
I’ve created a custom sidebar for a career portal on our website. On every page and post it presents perfectly โ except if I add post style 3 (same goes for full width, but we don’t use that style).
There seems to be some code interfering with the sidebar coding. How can I solve this?
This is how the sidebar is supposed to look:
http://i.imgur.com/GMAGqLP.jpg
This is how it looks with style 3/full width:
http://i.imgur.com/7PSCjnz.jpg
As you can see my margin coding doesn’t seem to apply, leaving more space within the coloured boxes. In addition the text in the bottom element breaks onto new lines in tw places.
This is the code I use (text block in widget section):
<div style=float:left;margin-top:-16px;background-color:#2d9dd8;padding-left:14px;padding-right:24px;">

Hi,
Please check the td_module_blog.php file here: http://screencast.com/t/aVt8xkPTOr and notice if that the alt tag it’s present, as you can see the image function it’s already inserting an alt tag.
I have also checked this on category pages: http://screencast.com/t/No1jQTd5qnR and http://screencast.com/t/fdJ4OWCLN
Please send an URL with an example of this from your site so I can check this.
Thanks
I think the rewrite images from my code in the pagespeed topic thread does it as part of the bundle. Meaning mod_pagespeed uses “levels” of control settings, where the top level (they call “group filter”) setting includes the 10 features below that.
I use this on Apache:
ModPagespeedEnableFilters rewrite_images
See:
https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/module/filter-image-optimize
Actually there is top level group filter command (which I’m using), sub level group command, and then base commands (my terms not theirs); so a sub level group command like
ModPagespeedEnableFilters recompress_images
includes a number of base filters.
QUOTE:
This filter attempts to recompress image data and strip unnecessary metadata such as thumbnails. This is also a group filter, and is equivalent to enabling: convert_gif_to_png, convert_jpeg_to_progressive, convert_jpeg_to_webp, jpeg_subsampling, recompress_jpeg, recompress_png, recompress_webp, strip_image_color_profile, and strip_image_meta_data.
Again, these filters may be enabled or disabled individually:
ModPagespeedEnableFilters convert_jpeg_to_progressive

Let’s hope. My experience with G+ on these matters has been 99.5% consistent for over a year now – only had one or two posts show up on G+ via the automatic JetPack feature with any issues at all. One was no image, and one was the url with no image or title. That includes my old primary site, and its new reinvention, as well as four other sites using various themes and much less posting post frequency.
Gonna have to check up on the changes to authorship. Seems odd they’d reverse any of that after making such a huge push to revamp the SEO industry with authorship involvement the last few years. Thanks for the tip.
Recently my blog that runs Newspaper theme was hacked several times: database was modified, login account was changed… I use Dreampress service from Dreamhost and after a while, they came with the issue: the Revolution Slider plugin that comes with the theme is a vulnerable plugin! I am posting their message to me about it that says Revolution Slider version 4.6 fix the problem. I wonder if the latest Newspaper version fix that with a newer version of Rev Slider also?
Thanks.
————————————————————————
Hello,
Thanks for writing.
I found that you have the vulnerable plugin “revslider” (Revolution
Slider) installed here:
/home/wp_xv8mei/…../wp-content/plugins/revslider
This has a file disclosure vulnerability that could allow a hacker to
read your wp-config.php file. This would give them access to your MySQL
database, which in turn would give them access to your WordPress
dashboard, which in turn would give them access to your WordPress theme
and plugin files, which they could then edit and add malicious code to.
That malicious code could then be used to infect the rest of your site.
Here’s the relevant log:
179.178.117.187 – – [28/Aug/2014:09:21:57 -0700] “GET
/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=revslider_show_image&img=../wp-config.php
HTTP/1.1” 200 3300

179.178.117.187 – – [28/Aug/2014:09:22:00 -0700] “GET

179.178.117.187 – – [28/Aug/2014:09:22:03 -0700] “GET
/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=revslider_show_image&img=../wp-config.php
HTTP/1.1” 200 3302 “-” “curl/7.26.0”
The developer recently fixed that vulnerability as of version 4.6. They
didn’t announce it as a security update but we tested it to confirm. So
make sure to update it now.
To test the exploit, visit the following URL:
http://…../wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=revslider_show_image&img=../wp-config.php
If the vulnerability is still active, visiting this URL will download a
file named “admin-ajax.php” to your computer. This file will actually
contain the code from your “wp-config.php” file.

Hi,
You would have to place the code for them here: http://screencast.com/t/oVGKzHWhn
This is the code I used there as an example:
echo '<span class="my-custom-title">MY TITLE</span>';
And this is how it looks: http://screencast.com/t/vqHVNFI3O8
You can style it to look like you want via css, use the class add to span tag:
This is the css I used:
span.my-custom-title {
position: relative;
width: 100px;
height: 100px;
background-color: transparent;
font-family: fantasy;
font-size: 100px;
color: aliceblue;
}
Modify it as you like or write another.
Use the same method to add other elements. If you don’t have any css and html knowledge we recommend to hire a freelancer to do this for you.
Thanks
Hi! I tried this code and it changes the font on the entire page, including the sidebar widgets. I would like to change the font & size just on the main body of the page, not the other elements. How can I modify the code to accomplish this?
Thanks for any tips!
looks like one main thing for mobile you need to fix is the images
1) set the default compression in your functions.php file per my recommendations in the pagespeed topic (specify 60, since default with WP is 90)
2) regenerate thumbs once you do that to reduce all in size from core starting image you uploaded; but make sure you have backups if needed
3) make sure you use a plugin like smush.it or similar, although changing your default compression might do most of that for you
4) make sure the images you’re uploading to begin with are optimized, per my recommendations in the pagespeed topic — for example for the featured post image you would want to shoot for less than 40kb for the big 745 image, vs 100,300,kb or whatever. Some of mine are under 25kb. Start with quality factor of 25 in Photoshop with 0.2 blur, and see how it looks. Anything with lots of red needs higher to avoid distortion.
Set images to progressive not optimized when saving to web from image application; don’t embed meta data unless you must have copyright info in there for legal reasons.
If you wrangle the many many suggestion image compression issues for your mobile score it will help your rating as mobile is all about speed of stuff loading on page; and if you have 10 photos all twice the size they could be, that is your issue right there for most things! ๐
Hello guys!
I have a problem with Eliminate render-blocking JavaScript and CSS in above-the-fold content in the mobile version, i read all the topic and try everything but i dont know why its not working,
In the Speed Booster Pack i have enabled Load CSS asynchronously, Minify all CSS styles, Load JS from Google Libraries and Defer parsing of javascript files
Im using TagDiv Speedbooster plugin to and w3 total cache… i dont know what else i can do ๐
HI, Lucian
I wasn’t talking so much about the entire sidebar, just the backing color of the blocks behind the text for each widget header.
For example the color of the text behind the header titles in the sidebar widgets seems to be controlled by the default/custom “site color” — however, in my case I want to use brighter color as default, but more muted for the sidebar text blocks/headers for the sidebar widgets, if that makes sense ๐
Chris
Hi Christopher,
As you can see the div of the sidebar has just two classes span4 column_container and it’s a bit harder to target just the sidebar via css and change it’s background color as long as a div just like that is used in the footer also and changing the sidebar will get you changing the footer also, here is an example: http://screencast.com/t/rPW4QDKyh
You can do it tough by adding a specific class on each template you want to change the sidebar color then use that class to target the sidebar and change it’s color via custom css. Here is an example for the category page template: http://screencast.com/t/bTwprqfBwJ and the result: http://screencast.com/t/MNts8tpk
using this css:
.custom-sidebar-background {
background-color: lightgray;
}
You can add this class for all templates and use it to change the sidebar’s background color.
Another thing that you should take into consideration is that the sidebar doesn’t have any padding so you would want to add some padding to it using the same class, but keep in mind that the some blocks may react not in an expected way to this padding because of the width.
Also, as you probably noticed, the post page sidebar has a class which you can use .td-post-sidebar
Regarding the option on panel for this we will leave this at everyone’s hand and use this method to achieve this. This option will be available though within our new theme which we are working on.
Hope this helps!
Thanks

Wellllllll…. I had trade some posts with RADU on this topic in hopes he might add a custom field on the user page for an author image loaded locally (this can be hacked from the functions.php file; I did this with one of my own responsive themes in 2011 pre-bootstrap which was insane — three column layouts without bootstrap were really a freaking pain for responsive; float right inside a float right … ugh!).
This was on my to do list before I got sick … and was just thinking the same thing ๐
You would think there would be plugin for this, since really all it takes is adding new field to user meta for each user; then calling that from the theme author box template.
This may be my Labor Day weekend project ! ๐
example how to on this topic of adding custom user meta
http://justintadlock.com/archives/2009/09/10/adding-and-using-custom-user-profile-fields
in the above case we’d be replacing a twitter field with a user photo field, where we could put in local URL to the user photo (e.g., /uploads/my-name-here_100x100.jpg); then call that in the Newspaper theme.
@christopher, just disabled Gravatar and my post page got a bit faster: https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fgdgtarena.com%2F2014%2F08%2F26%2Fiphone-6-leak%2F&tab=desktop but how can i show the author image there?
“web safe fonts” refers to fonts built in to all web browsers (Google “web safe fonts”). So if you change your default fonts in your style.css file to not use ANY Google fonts, then you don’t need to load any fonts from Google (I’m using the gill sans “stack” myself). Then comment out the call to the google fonts in your functions.php file (line 48 I think, if memory serves).
This is a nice info page I usually refer people to:
http://cssfontstack.com/
To load Google fonts via your own CSS, this means that if you look at the line in your functions.php which would be loading the default google fonts for the theme (like pt sans and roboto or whatever), simply open the CSS from that link, and copy the CSS which is being loaded from Google …. then put that CSS at bottom of your style.css file … this way you’re loading the fonts directly from your CSS; not loading a CSS file externally which then loads the Google fonts … you’re cutting out a step, and removing one external file load over which you have no control. I do this on our main business site to load Open Sans from Google directly. This is a common fix for using Google fonts which has been around a few years now. ๐
Hope that made sense.
I really need to write an ebook on this stuff with examples! ๐
Well, several things you can do
1) use only text ads from adsense, so images are not loaded (one big issue right there)
2) very aggressive caching and/or proper CDN
3) fast server (less than 300msec response time)
4) avoid stuff like photon or other stuff loading off wordpress
5) optimize your social media stuff; use share buttons not the numerical crap that needs to go “fetch” numbers for EACH button
6) load fonts from your own CSS not from Google CSS; or use web safe fonts ONLY
7) limit use of plugins which slow down your php
8) optimize your config.php file to include paths to your resources
9) do not use child theme which uses css redirect which google does *not* like
etc.
I’m sure Shashank could likely provide a single “round up” of all the stuff he’s done in the particular case of his own site. I just tested one of his pages, which as a desktop score of 93, mobile 86; which is pretty damn impressive with adsense and disqus running!
https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.styzic.com%2Fgadgets%2Fiphone%2Fbigger-iphone-6l%2F491%2F&tab=desktop

Hi Christopher,
I know that but the thing is, some website are getting 97 with AdSense and Shareholic turned on. For example, one of the forum member, Shashank has ads on his website and shareoholic as well but he has 97. (http://www.styzic.com/). I guess you have AdSense and you do have a brilliant page speed…How is it possible, then? :/ Please help.
Hi guys,
I currently have 90 for my desktop site and 75 for mobile (http://bit.ly/1tKOeYu). I have minified all of the theme files and did everything to speed up the site. But, as I use AdSense and Google Analytic, the speed is a bit slow. For example, as you can see on the screenshot bellow, Google is asking me to Leverage Browser Caching for this URL: http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js and other URLs.

But as I don’t have access to the files, I can’t do anything to them. ๐ So, how am I meant to modify them to make the site faster? The same thing is happening on the Eliminate render-blocking JavaScript and CSS in above-the-fold content section where Google asks me to Optimize CSS Delivery for one of their Google Fonts. And Minify JS for their Google AdSense script.
Please help.
Thanks!
Please see the sticky topic top of the forum on optimizing your site for Google PageSpeed. Try using the GTMetrix site to test your speed, as GTMetrix will give you specific info on WHAT needs to be fixed at server level, image compression, slow loading, etc. in more detail.
For example for your server you need to
1) consider faster server account
2) turn on gzip/deflate on server (ask hosting provider)
3) set expiration headers, which can be done from htaccess file on Apache based servers
4) optimize your images, using something like smushit, and/or set compression level with your functions.php file and then regenerate all thumbs; make sure your images you upload are compressed as small as possible from photoshop or whatever you’re using (e.g., quality of 30 if you can, 52 for anything with reds; or try “medium” jpeg quality when save for web).
Those items above are good for about 30 points, and have nothing to do with the theme, but are necessary for ANY WordPress site.

My google Speed value is extremely bad. What can I do to improve it. What is the trouble?

Hi,
I have a trouble in my website with Twitter social counter. I want to set two different Twitter accounts in my website. When I only put one twitter social counter it works well, but when I try to put to different widgets with two different twitter accounts it fails. Is it a theme problem? What can I do to solve it?
For example here, in the right sidebar at the bottom.

Thank you
