@proinsurer Do you use the version 4 of the Newspaper? The script was created to import theme settings, rename shortcodes if the user upgrade to version 6 of the theme. If you already have version 6 you don’t have to run the script. As you can see no Newspaper 4 settings can be found in your database, so maybe it is an error with your database. Try to revert to the old version if made a full backup like it is recommended in the documentation – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/

You can update via FTP, there is a video tutorial in the documentation – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/ There should not be any problems with child theme customizations as we did not change html, just added fixes and new features as you can check the update_log file.

Generally yes. See the theme docs on how to do updates, as a good starting point.
Since it’s a bundled plugin and not a separate license, you cannot “update” it from the publisher of the plugin or via the WordPress repository as a commercial plugin.
I generally don’t use the Envato toolkit myself as it sometimes breaks things.
FTP is really important to learn to use for WP, as it’s often the only way to do proper backups, edit files, edit htaccess, set permissions, etc.
See the update instructions in the theme docs, right side of page.
ThemeForest themes are not part of the WordPress repository, so they generally need to be updated manually, typically via FTP is best way.
Also some great tutorials online for how to update WordPress themes.

I purchased newspaper last week and then received an email (Sept 21) asking me to update newspaper. In the past, I would just update all plugins and themes from my WP dashboard. I am reading through all the docs and forum info on updating this theme trying to figure this out. There has to be a much simpler way to do this. What am I missing?

Hi the cache plugin that you recommend breaks my site giving me the white screen of death forcing me to go into my files through hosting to remove it. Why is this if it the recommended plugin? I used to use w3 total cache and it was great but does not work since I updated the theme. what do you recommend I use?

I updated Newspaper via Envato Toolkit plugin – Now is Newspaper 6.5, but … Visual Composer is not updated to 4.7.1.1 and is still 4.6.2 version and in my WordPress administration I can’t find out any message about new version of Visual Composer.
Is Visual Composer possible to update only via FTP not via WordPress administration?

I have recently updated the newspaper theme as well as the visual composer plugin.
However after the update, my pages built using visual composer are blank (only the top menu can be displayed). Why is that so? Any solutions for that?

By installing the child theme as it is in /code folder the parent theme functionality won’t be affected because all theme’s files are in main theme. The child theme become useful if you want to customize a post template for example, you will move the required files and the changes won’t be affected by futures updates. In fact this is the point of a child theme, to keep the customization even if the main theme it’s updated. But this is not always valid, because once in a while the child theme it’s also updated, or if the main theme pass through a major update it’s possible that some customizations not work well anymore. There is no reason to install the child theme unless if you decide to customize the parent theme. Note that customizing a theme involve good coding skills otherwise its functionality will be damaged rather than improved.

@Carel – The theme uses wordpress default registration and user management feature and wordpress requires a mail server. If the password recovery works it means that the server is active so i guess you get some kind or error or maybe you have a firewall restriction. Try to check the error.log file to see if there’s anything on this. If you use a plugin check on web for clues, i see there are some issues wordpress latest updates – https://wordpress.org/support/topic/wp-mail-smtp-does-not-work-on-wordpress-43

Oh… will do! I do know that I should do a backup of the site but what do you consider to be the best way to update? I use a child theme and did all my customizations via child theme. Do I need to worry about correcting CSS, settings and so on?

I just updated to Newspaper 6.5 and the latest Visual Composer. After I have changed an old “tab” element to the new tab, the new element was not displayed in the defined theme color, but in “default” blue color.
I finally found out that td_css_generator is only called to re-generate the CSS when you save options in Newspaper’s “Theme Panel”. Since it is often not necessary to change settings after updating the theme I guess many people update the CSS included in the pages only by accident.
It would be great to either mention the necessity to go to the theme panel and just press “Save” in the update instructions or to have an automatic detection if the theme was upgraded and then call td_css_generator automatically.

Please make sure you update the theme properly using this guide (all the steps how to update from version 4) – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/ and also update the plugins that come with the theme files from the /plugins folder. Also if you use the child theme, you have to update it as the old files modifications or custom css will not work in the version 6.
If you have custom modification to the theme’s files you will need to re-add them as when you update the theme these files will be overwritten, but the the styling options you’ve set in the WordPress Theme Customize or settings should not be affected.

You can change text color and the background color. But if you mean other styling besides these options, there are none at this time. Maybe in a future update we will be able to implement more settings.
