To reduce the queries, you can check the fallow.
Check if you are using ajax pagination, mega menu, and many blocks (the theme is making a query for each block in parts, and if you are using mega menu, each element as mega menu makes queries, also ajax pagination makes queries to the database). Also, make sure that you use lazyload for images.
Other type of settings that can reduce the numbers of queries: use a good cache plugin WP Rocket, use object cache (redis), and use flex block cache – https://forum.tagdiv.com/use-flex-blocks-cache-option/ (with will reduce the number of request instead of a request for each page load for each flex block, this request will be only after 5-10 minutes for that flex block, it depends on the time set)

Did you check if the theme plugins were updated after the theme itself was updated? It’s possible that only the theme was updated, but the previous theme plugins weren’t.
In these situations, you should go to Newspaper > Plugins and install or update the theme plugins you’re using on your website.

The only problem in 12.7.2 was related to the table of contents from the theme, this indeed has some problems in some situations, but not on those reported.
If you do not want the option to expand the table of contents, just use the option to turn on / off expand toc – https://i.imgur.com/wNLSguh.png. If the option is disabled, the hide text will be removed and the toc will always be visible.
The other situation you are facing with the duplicate content is not related to the theme update, and I suggest keeping only one SPC and removing the second one.
