The theme general width cannot be changed, it is predefined. It is not recommended to make any modifications to it, as this will most likely cause layout issues.
All the blocks and grids depend on this fixed width, their design will be damaged if it is modified.

There are row options in the composer to stretch them to predefined widths or full widths

Header and footer can also be stretched as you mention

Except removing the background set for the row, there would be no other way I can think of. That is how all the backgrounds are supposed to load. All backgrounds are treated similarly

It is supposed to be a feature, a smooth transition. If you don’t wasn’t this, you could design the page differently if possible.

Seems to be applied at the moment, that would mean the code worked. If you would like to make some more modifications to it, I will try to modify it.

The grids are predefined, changing how they look is not possible by a theme setting. These are all the available grids and full width grids

They can only be placed on full rows, having multiple grids in the same row is not possible.

Either you place them on a page or choose them in category pages, they should be full width always. Unless you have a background color/image set in the theme panel.
So full grids will be placed on a full row by default as soon as you drag them in the page, you could change the row layout after placing the grid on pages

If you do not want them to be full width, use normal grids

You can reduce the height of the main menu by changing the line height of the menu items

The top menu is not displayed on mobile, it is not supposed to display. It could be made to appear when the mobile theme plugin is not active, if absolutely needed. It would require a code like the following in this case

Regarding the thumbnails, when stretching the rows with content the thumbnails will be stretched as well. That is why they appear like that. You can use Full big grids which use larger thumbnails

That could be done with Visual composer as well. I have tried like this, but it could be achieved in different ways.
First I placed 2 rows in a page, the top row will have a background image/color, the second one will contain block 5 limited to 3 posts

Then I set a negative margin in the bottom row

The second row will be positioned over the first row with the background

For the inside of the containers there is no theme setting. It could only be done with CSS code. The black version demo contains custom design like that for example

If you mean the sidebar which presents all the available demos, that is custom made. If you would like to achieve something similar for your website best you use a plugin, rather than code implementation.
