That will not be possible, if you update the theme to 9.6 the old plugin cannot be used anymore. Now the official AMP plugin can be used, integrated with the mobile theme plugin
– https://tagdiv.com/amp-newspaper-theme/
So there will be a menu, custom code section, a spot for the AMP auto ads code, these are much requested options. Let us know if you have more questions.

When the mobile theme is active each page needs two versions, one for desktop created with the page builder or in any way possible in the theme, and one for mobile with the simple mobile editor – http://prntscr.com/mtgao6
If no content is entered in the mobile editor the page will be empty on mobile. We will add a notice/message to be displayed in this case, as it is quite a common issue.

If you want the mobile theme to be integrated with the AMP plugin, it has to be activated in the theme panel

What you are seeing now is the default AMP look, without the mobile theme.

1. Try using this setting – http://prntscr.com/mugrd0 the zoom on hover will work then.

2. On mobile the same module and thumbnails that are loaded on desktop will be used. So the thumbnail size is bigger than the reduced size of the module on mobile. For the moment it is selected/clicked this will be seen.
I tried various CSS codes to remove the selection effect, but none worked.

3. From what I can see at the moment the website loads quite good

It is true that they do not allow using caching plugins, I believe they already use a caching system of they own

There are topics in the forum regarding website loading speed, with suggestions that you could try. But maybe these methods are not allowed in wordpress.com.
Using many block types with ajax pagination and ajax filters may be an issue, especially when there are many visitors on the website.
Since the speed booster plugin cannot be used in this case, maybe they can provide an alternative for render blocking optimization. Or a suggestion for an allowed plugin. Also some optimization guides of their own.

4. I believe that should be fixed in the latest version. From what I know there were some modifications to prevent this from happening. So you can activate the background ad.

For the background loading on mobile there were no modifications up to this moment, I will check on this task.

Sorry for the inconveniences, there was a decision made to integrate the mobile theme with the official AMP plugin.
There were many requests to have a menu on AMP since the introduction of the AMP plugin, a section for adding the auto ads code directly in the theme panel (not by adding it in the plugin code each time the theme was updated), sections for adding custom code and a few others. So it was decided to use the official AMP plugin together with the mobile theme, which would be a better solution than a dedicated AMP plugin as before. The mobile theme is optimized for mobile for increased performance.

The official AMP plugin can be used by its own, and the mobile theme deactivated if you don’t want to use it. Or you could consider using a different AMP plugin altogether. Let us know if you have more questions.

If you are using the envato plugin for update is possible sometimes to not synchronize with the last updates and you’ll need to make the update manually.
We recommend to make first an update on localhost or on sub-domain and only after that to make it to the live website.
Also we recommend to make first a full backup to your website.
All settings in theme panel will remain, only the changes in theme files will be override.

The mobile layout is different from the desktop layout only the responsive version of theme show the desktop layout on mobile.

Unfortunately the mobile theme do not take the desktop version, maybe in coming update will be some more option to can make the layout form mobile theme more friendly.
Please provide some more details and some screenshots from were I can see what is the problem.

Usually when the mobile version appear on desktop is a cache problem, please make sure that you clear all cache ( we recommend to clear cache after each update ), and try again.

If you do not like the AMP plugin from 9.6 because is integrate in mobile theme, you can use an AMP plugin like the one from WordPress Amp plugin
