we created this structure to show the content of the page in different formats.

so to disable the date you need to find with what module the page (or the section) of the page is displayed with and remove or comment that code.

We changed some of the code, so it looks ok as for the moment. But it’s a dirty workaround.

Last time I wrote I was referring to the Slider. Now we are using the Big Slider and we fixed it, as said. I am not 100% satisfied though.

I don’t think the server has the GD library. I am using images with a width of 1200px as standard.

I would stick with ONLY enabling Page Cache.

And now … my morning soapbox: brought to you by clean living and cute kittens ….

Remember that if you’re using the TagDiv Speed Booster plugin, it is MOVING things around on the page for better performance when the page is loaded. You do not want the dynamic stuff cached or it won’t show updates to things on pages. Your home page would not show new items, categories wouldn’t show new items, sidebars wouldn’t show new, recent, related, etc.

So, you only want to enable the page cache which will basically serve up a snapshot of the page and not the dynamic stuff which is still called via php.

Newspaper type sites are way more complex than say, a blog about raising rabbits on a farm, or a bicycling blog updated once a month. If you have content updated daily, or even hourly, caching can help with speed and limit load on server, but it can be TRICKY to optimize for YOUR particular website, due to how elements are loaded on pages, where they are, what other optimizations are running, etc.

There truly is no “one click” caching option for any busy, complex website. Blogs sure. Complex websites need to be tweaked for advanced tools like caching, just like all the other tweaks not built-in to WordPress, or the theme.

So, for most advanced users, there is trial and error – nothing to do with the theme, and not covered by support team for your particular use.

The theme devs have “recommended” you only use Page Cache, as that is how they achieve their own high speed rating/score.

So, you may wish to
1) fully optimize your site, outside of caching!
2) enable tagdiv speed booster and make sure nothing breaks if you’re using some kind of external plugin which might conflict with the optimizations (on our site the < > arrows disappear in 3.6, with WP 3.8.1; with 3.5 the slide out “you might like” broke) — you have to decide if this is a benefit for you or not; YOU need to test, decide, then either use or not for YOUR particular solution
3) make trusted backups of your site before doing any caching!!
4) enable W3C and use page cache only; test your site — either determine if it works for you or not, and some trade offs, and if there are workarounds for some things like page counters, random or recent dynamic elements, etc. — and there are forum posts on issues other have faced with using specific plugins, or with certain features in use (e.g., JetPack, forms, membership, bbpress, etc.)
5) adjust, test, adjust, test.

If you have no idea how to do any of that you likely would need to hire a developer at an hourly rate. Or, do what most of us do which is trial, error, forums, Google search, test, retest, learn, fail, learn.

The reason there is no simple “how to” for caching, is that there are a hundred things which might be impacted by that if you turn on every option in the theme and load up a dozen external plugins.

In a perfect world, for caching, the average joe might try this:
1) setup the theme with only the basic functions; no special menu, no JetPack, no “counters” for social media reads, one ad management system or AdSense.
2) enable tagDiv Speed Booster BETA plugin to optimize the placement of the CSS, JS components, Google fonts, et al.
3) put in the basic optimizations: a) gzip/deflate at server level, b) htaccess, c) image optimization tweaks (plugin, and/or functions.php mod from my speed posts)
4) W3C or other caching with minimal page caching settings.
5) test site.
6) turn on the “fun” features like megamenu, jetpack, forms, social reads/likes; choose what works; what doesn’t — either find workaround or don’t use.

There is ALWAYS a tradeoff between speed and features. You can’t have 100 add-ons and have the speed of a site with 15 add-ons. So, YOU need to decide if speed vs features matters, or other way around.

Aha! Great. I see you did it that way for those who like to runs ads in background. I was able to figure out the “middle” section but not the other 2.

on most professional news portals, popups (“interstitials” on many sites, technically) are actually managed by the AD MANAGER toolset, and not the CMS portion. Meaning, the CMS runs the content, the Ad Manager runs the ad placement, timing, tracking, etc.

You likely will want to look into an ad management platform to integrate, which offers pro level tools to implement interstitials, tracking, and other elements for your specific needs.

Or, you could use very simple existing tools like “nBar – Advanced WordPress Multipurpose Bar Builder” which allows you to slide in footer or header ads. Or, “WordPress Advert Flap Pro” which has fly in ad elements, or “Interstitial Ads for WordPress.”

Hopefully you won’t be too easily frustrated by that idea.

Thanks for your comment. Yes, I’m aware of the on/off possibility and of course users can close the box if they want, I would just think it’s not an unreasonable request to have it not obscure the footer.

The social share floating element I’m using (WPMU) for example (the development site is at martinmuir.com/blueventures/) has this option – you can set the height it stops at so it doesn’t cover footer content. Just seems to make sense to me 🙂

Anyway, like I say thanks for the comment – I’ve learned a lot from your replies on other threads and appreciate more than just the devs working to make the forums better 🙂

in Themes/newspaper/includes/wp_booster/ find the file td_menu.php

edit the ‘array’ and ‘show child cat’ fields (as shown below) to your desired value (here I changed from 5 to 8)

to order the sub categories I used Category Order plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/taxonomy-terms-order/

Tried that. Same thing. I have not added any new plugins (other than the ones with this theme) since. I have emailed you all. So I will await your response.

Sadly, the oooold timthumb and other thumbnail apps had “smart” cropping. It seems the thumbnail function built-in to WordPress (and used by all modern themes, except some legacy stuff) isn’t so smart. I just ran into this on client site where every photo would show people’s stomachs vs heads on the indexes with the fancy wide thumbs we were using, had to go back to “bloggy” square pix for the time being (ick!). This is nothing you can control right now such as “crop from top” vs “crop from middle” as far as I know.

Interesting, though. Wonder if WP *does* have this as a function hook. Hmm….. quick search on that. and … NOPE. It doesn’t have that function.

These folks tried to do a plugin for this issue, in the WP repository – VERY clever, when you upload image you can set the crop location/focus (!). This should be built in to WP, if you ask me 🙂

Tried again today. White screen only from user side and for admin immediately after adding another menu location (exactly as you instruct). I can’t leave it up because it prevents me from working on the site. Since we are in different time zones, let me know what would be a good time to leave my extra menu code in place so you can see.

Thanks for continuing help with this. It’s important for my advertising efforts that I am able to add specific menus (one for each top level (main menu) category to help in my advertising campaigns so that when users browse to a category, they will get my menu for that category, which will include several subcategories. This also helps me focus my advertising for those categories.

2. While I’m writing this, I wanted to know if it is possible to specify categories for each ad location? What I am trying to do is show only certain ads for certain categories/pages. I am using a plugin that helps me do this per category for sidebar an shortcode ad locations (within content, in the footer, etc., but since Newspaper Ads are not category-specific, I’m trying to find a solution to be more specific which of my ads run in the Newspaper Ad locations on a per category basis.

I seem to got the code working, but it only works when i edit the themes blog module. I have a child theme, but when i edit the child themes blog module it doesn’t work. I have copied the blog module file to Newspaper-Child/includes/modules/module_modifier/ but it only works when i edit the file in the normal theme. All other module files i edited in Newspaper-Child/includes/modules/ seem to work fine. How come this file doesn’t work? All other files in my child theme work, so i don’t know if i’m doing anything wrong?

Also, could you tell me where to paste this code to hide the header ad?

another solution wold be to create a sidebar only for that particularly category and add a text widget from the widgets area, then ad your ad code there. in this way the sidebar you created will be displayed only in that particularly category.

It’s possible to create a function that uses the meta in the custom fields to hide ads per post. I posted this question today in another thread, because i dont know which meta to be used and how to construct the function, but it certainly is possible. I’ll keep you posted when I get an answer!

thanks for the answer. I disable ads, i only have 1 in the homepage, in w3 total cache i enable only Page Cache, i put your code in htaccess, and launch the pagespeed test. If i make a pagespeed test in others webs the screenshot of the mobile and desktop in pagespeed it’s ok, but in my site isn’t. I don’t know what’s the problem :S. Sometimes appears something, sometimes it’s empy, sometimes appears only the text of menu mobile (in mobile screen)

you may want to read through the entire pagespeed topic (big sticky top of the forum), as all of this has been well covered there.

Generally you can’t do anything about things like addthis (although I did post a hack to load that in async mode), or jetpack – as those load on other servers and will show up as errors when you run pagespeed analytics. If it’s not loading off your site, it will likely show up as an error of some kind – this includes recaptcha, adsense ads, etc.

Not sure what you mean about looking at source code of theme vs source code of the page — the theme code is not rendered while the code on your site is rendered with all the stuff coming from dbase and external and queries, etc. If you’re trying to compare the “demo” to your pages, that may not work either. You should follow the instructions to setup the cache (remember you need to CLEAR cache every time you change things like htaccess, new plugin, etc.), the speed booster, the page expires time.

For realistic speed – test without addthis, adsense, or jetpack. Then put that stuff back and decide how much impact you want to have on your site. I use addthis for social buttons on one site, and then the theme stuff on another. I don’t use jetpack as it’s slow and I hate loading stuff from a mothership that isn’t my own. I limit number of ads on page (4 ads will be slow if images!) – try loading text only ads, to speed up page!

But a *lot* of this, if not all, has been covered in the pagespeed topic. So, best to start there, and remember it’s virtually impossible to get above 91-93 in desktop with a busy site, lots of pix, wordpress theme, external stuff. Mobile will be slower, no matter what you do. 76+ isn’t too awful right now. 80+ is goal. 65 would be awful. To really optimize for mobile requires making a version of page which most newspaper sites won’t do, and that is mostly text, one picture, minimal navigation, etc.

Google sadly doesn’t differentiate from “tablet friendly” and “iphone friendly.” SO, I’ve stopped crying over trying for a perfect score on phones — it’s not my primary audience. Tablets are, then desktop.

Anyway… that might not help. But
1) set cache to page cache ONLY
2) don’t use any minification stuff until you have speed booster plugin working right
3) make sure your htaccess has expires headers
4) make sure your web server is doing gzip/deflate
5) optimize your images prior to upload; if possible use my hack to increase compression level for thumbnails (or use smush.it or similar; I prefer to edit my functions.php file to change compression to “50”)
6) run your speed tests
7) turn off anything you don’t absolutely NEED if you’re seeking highest score
8) test and retest

THEME UPDATES:
I find it’s best to fully over-write the old theme with NEW theme folder each time, via FTP. I’ve had mixed results with “patching” over the past 10 years with WP sites, and more often than not they break somewhere due to permissions.

Frankly, it’s good habit, since you can also download a full snapshot via FTP before you do an update, to ensure you have a full snapshot. I date and RAR mine here for archival purposes.

Basically Google is against ANY “text link” advertising or text linking networks… however, if you are adding rel=nofollow you’re likely fine, but many sponsors want dofollow “pretend organic links” …. you will have to research that. TO CLARIFY:
organic links to things mentioned in an original article are organic – linking to GoDaddy if you mention them in tutorial on how to use their mod_pagespeed settings, for example. So, just linking to Apple’s website page about their new Mac, in doing review would not be spammy.

ALL sponsored links on pages and in articles should be rel=nofollow or you will be bitten! Linking to GoDaddy or “domain registration” with a dofollow sponsored link in an article is spammy.

Rarely, the ads sometimes work and sometimes do not work …
I have developed other sites where the ads always appear …
You could open multiple pages to make sure the matter? maybe I’m making a rookie mistake, as it is the first time I work with wordpress …
