You can update the theme without any problem because the Newspaper 8.8 is the following theme version after 8.7.5.

@hhealth Indeed, the new plugin may not work properly with an older theme, you could consider updating the theme. Check the new features added in 8.8 in the changelog (bottom of the page)

You seem to be using theme version 8.1.1. There would be no chance that the social counter plugin will work with the changes made by most social networks.
Please check the changelog to see all the fixes and new features of the theme through updates (bottom of the page) since 8.1.1 until latest 8.8

Older versions of the theme and plugins may also not work properly if you only update WordPress and not the theme and plugins.

There are settings for most things, so if a setting is created for a customization, there would be no need to make it custom. For creating CSS code there is a guide you can read

This is useful when for example there is no setting for a modification you want to make, or the setting is general and you want something more specific.

I would mention that on contrary you should not worry yourself with the child theme from the beginning. Until you get more familiarized with the actual theme and it’s capabilities and structure there would be no reason to have one.
If in the future you should require one or we recommend you to create one for a specific reason, you can use it then.
Child themes require maintenance as well, so you will have to monitor theme updates and changelogs to keep it up to date.

Very important is to use the latest version of the plugins which come bundled with the theme core files and from now on, for every theme install you should be careful to update the plugins. You will get a notification in the panel if you do not follow the right way, related versions of plugins.

Also try increasing the WP-memory to a more higher value if possible, that may not be enough
