This is the simplest solution of recreating the travel demo homepage on another demo. This cannot be done without the custom classes used by the travel demo.
Please follow these simple steps to recreate the travel demo homepage with another (or no) demo installed:

1)This is the ‘shortcode’ of the page layout. You can simply paste it inside to your page editor in classic mode and text mode: http://screencast.com/t/SUt9ItUc the code: http://pastebin.com/RAA6DkWp

2)The background image will not be found so you will need to add your own image in the row setting: http://screencast.com/t/yB2Bh0rbo

3)Please add this class: td-travel to the body of the website like so: http://screencast.com/t/fOt9sfquQtVy

4)In the final step, you will have to copy/paste the custom CSS for this demo travel from the core file, like this -> http://screencast.com/t/oQurpGTnM

There is no ideal image size I can recommend. You will have to asses the containers and thumbs you plan on using on your site and the post templates as well. if you use post templates that use the full size images like: http://demo.tagdiv.com/newspaper/td-post-2015-awards-all-of-the-best-and-worst-moments-from-the-show/ then a full had image is required. If not, you need to inspect every element especially on the homepage. If you use big grids, your images must be at least the size of the big grid container otherwise they will not fit inside and not display properly. Here is a list of all thumbs used in our theme:

I meant that the homepage will not show the image in it;s content. Here is an example of a page that has a featured image set: http://screencast.com/t/biiTZexI – it does not show up on the front-end: http://screencast.com/t/konXRWm7mZW but if I were to create a block on another page and filter pages instead of posts: http://screencast.com/t/qt9mnQSj only then will the featured image of the page be seen: http://screencast.com/t/yhcsaRuPE

The featured images can be added for pages like so: http://screencast.com/t/Ycbnwyaamt but the image will not be visible anywhere unless you create blocks on your homepage and set them to show pages. That is why the featured image is there fore, so the blocks can show you an image if you filter pages inside them instead of posts, but this image will not be visible on the page itself.

The logo is a big image so a header style that uses the full logo is the best choice (9, 10 or 11)
The stretched grid does not seem to position properly for the site as the content is stretched. You can use revolution slider to create a full width slider below the menu like in this demo: http://demo.tagdiv.com/newspaper_blog_travel/ (the slider is already included in the theme archive under demo sliders) or you can use one of the big grids: http://demo.tagdiv.com/newspaper/big-grid-9/
The rest are simply a selection of block elements on the homepage.

Please try to change the name of it and avoid using the ‘homepage’ title because it seems to be a conflict and that’s why your new sidebar with this title do not appear on your side. Clear all your caches and test it again.
