Hello folks.
I’m also having issues with trying to save theme settings. I’m using the latest version of both WordPress and Newsmag themes. I’ve disabled all plug-ins except for Wordfence, WPBakery Visual Composer,Ultimate Addons for Visual Composer, tagDiv Visual Composer Shim and tagDiv Speed Booster.
When in the theme settings page in the admin panel, I’m able to modify most of the settings without any issue. However, when I try to click on the Block predefined style section links to modify them, the ajax spinning icon just hangs and doesn’t pop open the menu. When I pull open the dev console in Chrome, I noticed this:
Uncaught SyntaxError: Unexpected token < admin.php:1
Things that I’ve tried:
Cleared both the server cache and the browser cache.
I’ve spoken with my host, HostGator and asked them to check the admin-ajax.php and confirm that it wasn’t being blocked, which they said it wasn’t. They also stated that the maximum memory limit is already set to 256, and cannot be changed by the end-user on a shared hosting account.
Reference: http://support.hostgator.com/articles/cpanel/php-settings-that-cannot-be-changed
memory_limit = 256M (MAXIMUM)
Per Chris’s link above, I also went into the wp-config.php file and added the following line of code:
/** Increased memory allotment to prevent Ajax Errors. https://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_wp-config.php#Increasing_memory_allocated_to_PHP */
define( 'WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M' );
(The official WordPress.org article Chris showed said you had to add it in prior to settings.)
Please note, this has to be put before wp-settings.php inclusion.
You can see it in-line where I included it right after the absolute path section, and before the wp-settings.php section, here:
/** Absolute path to the WordPress directory. */
if ( !defined('ABSPATH') )
define('ABSPATH', dirname(__FILE__) . '/');
/** Increased memory allotment to prevent Ajax Errors. https://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_wp-config.php#Increasing_memory_allocated_to_PHP */
define( 'WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M' );
/** Sets up WordPress vars and included files. */
require_once(ABSPATH . 'wp-settings.php');
Perhaps this is related, but when I’m on the front end, and try to use the left and right arrows to scroll through content in the various section blocks, the ajax loading icon just spins, and the console spits out the following error:
SyntaxError: Unexpected token < madlymanly.com/:1
Any thoughts as to what is causing the syntax error message in the console? Thank you in advance for the help!
Hi:
I have read Chris’s insight and other comments by authors and implemented them in my site. However, my page speed is following
-google test 29/100 mobile and 35/100 desktop
-GTmatric 68% and YSlow 69%
-Pingdom 64/100
My wordpress: using WP super cache, APC, WP Optimize, TD-booster, implemented Chris header release code, and function code, the only thing I don’t have is an image-compressor, I do have about 20+ plugins including google map, WP ads pro, tweeter feed, instagrem feed
my server: demi-dedicated VPS 3GB ram SSH disk
Server setting: mod_deflate is active and gzip compression also. Also PHP code and MySQL queries are cached by xCache, and all our clients are on SSD disks.
My questions:
1) Anything that I did wrong?
2) Any other improvements I can get?
3) Any suggestion or tools I can implement?
Thanks a bunch
Hi,
I also checked this and did not found any issue with unique articles, I couldn’t recreate this. If it is enabled every time you edit the page it should remain enable. Please check this also without any plugins active leave just Visual Composer active, clear cache and see if you still have this issue.
Thanks!
Hi,
Please make sure that you use the latest theme version 4.6.3 it has the new YouTube API support. If you need to update please use FTP method – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme/ and update also the plugins that come with the theme’s files from the /plugins folder.
You also can check this without any plugins active, leave just Visual Composer active and clear cache and see if it works.
Thanks!
Hi,
You are right it seems that the menu icon and search are still not visible on mobiles. Please check your custom css as this code overwrite the icons css – http://screencast.com/t/CkbT9zn1 – http://screencast.com/t/DdOpK2P0iaC
We recommended W3TC in the past but now we also made some tests and WP Super Cache seems faster and we will recommend it also in our documentation for Newspaper 5.
Thanks!
Hi,
Please check this only with Visual Composer active, disable all other plugins and clear cache. Also do you use the latest theme version(1.7.1) and Visual Composer provided with the theme(4.4.4)? Please install the theme using FTP method – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-theme/ Let us know!
Thanks!
Hi,
Emil replied you via email!
Regarding Instagram embeds please test this without any plugins active and also make sure that you empty all caches, purge fields and disable cloudflare’s script rocket loader then test again.
Thanks
Hi,
Thanks Chris!
@rjohansen As Chris also said here the theme settings are stored in your database and I’m not sure how those are affected there if you haven;t done anything to alter them, we didn’t have any other reports of this happening so please update the theme to the latest version as I’ve noticed you use theme’s version 4.5 while the latest is 4.6.3 so download the theme from themeforest: http://themeforest.net/downloads then use this update guide to and the FTP method to update the theme, make sure that you also empty caches, disable plugins then update the theme then update the theme’s plugins from the /plugins folder provided within theme’s files.
Make sure that you also create backup of your database and current theme/wordpress install: https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups
Let us know if this happens again afterwards.
Thanks
Hi,
I’m not sure why you have this issue, please try also disable all plugins leave just Visual Composer active, clear cache and check again as you have these errors in the console – http://screencast.com/t/DHpEJ69XBS
Thanks!
Okay, not sure why the icon does not show on my phone but after disable all plug in, the site page speed increase to 71-83, that is really a bid jump,
I don’t like the w3 that slow me down any other cache that working with your theme? I test super cache seems working thinking about use hyper cache or quick cache, I am using site network function and hosting under VPS
Thanks
Hi,
Sorry I forgot to attach the screenshot with errors – http://screencast.com/t/Vcj8jvjfIu and yes those error are related to cache plugin minifications. I don’t know exactly what settings you have on this plugin. but we recommend to use only page cache – https://forum.tagdiv.com/w3-total-cache-configuration/
I have checked your site again and the search is working properly and it is displayed on mobiles, also the mobile menu.
Thanks!
Hi Alin:
thanks, I did diable all plugins except visual composer. Now, still the icon not show on mobile phone but the canvas menu now working.
I think the menu not wokring related to W3 cache but still why the icon not showing?
Thanks
Hi thanks
my web site
1) cisocial.net, I test out based on your suggestion and it doesn’t show up, i mainly suspect the firewall and cache program, I am using wordfence, wp all in one and w3 catche
2) my page speed seems too low, only 40-48 using this simple page, if I am using the real full page it is only 31-34, any suggestions?
thanks
Hi,
We haven;t had any similar reports so please also provide your site’s URL so we can check your site and also make sure that you empty all caches and test this without plugins and let us know how it goes.
Thanks
Hi,
Please make sure that you are using the latest theme version 1.7.1 and if you don’t please update it using FTP method – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-theme/ also check this without any plugins active, leave just Visual Composer active, clear cache and check again if you still have this issue.
Thanks!
Hi,
Please deactivate all plugins, leave only Visual Composer active, clear cache and check if you still have this pagination issue. If pagination works please activate your plugins one by one and see which one(or there is a conflicts between more plugins) caused this issue. Let me know how it goes!
Thanks!
Hi,
Please deactivate all plugins leave just Visual Composer active, empty cache and check if you still have this issue with mobile menu. Also if the issue disappeared please activate your plugins one by one and see which one caused that issue. If you use child theme please also switch to the main theme and check this.
Also please make sure that you use the latest theme version 4.6.3 and update using this guide(FTP method) – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme/ and also update the plugins that come with the theme files from the /plugins folder.

Hi! After i was done with theme customization and plugin search and setting up, I’v encountered one major problem, page speed with google speed test is 30/100 on desktop and ~20/100 for mobile version.
This is website url for now (testing domain)
http://twist.purespace.eu/
Can anyone help me get this speed up?
I’v instaled w3 cache and tagDiv speed plugin, they are live at the moment. Thanks in advance!
Hi,
I have checked your site and did not found any issues – http://screencast.com/t/mA5GDEttrnB – http://screencast.com/t/dL8cNpcy
Please clear your cache if you are using a cache plugin and also clear browser’s cache.
Thanks!
Hi,
I have checked your site but you have only 4 articles on your Big Slide so the arrows don’t appear. I see that other theme icons are loaded fine, so please make sure that you clear cache and check this after.
Thanks!
Hi,
Please deactivate all plugins leave just Visual Composer plugin active, also clear cache and check if you still have this issue with search dropdown. If you don’t have this issue anymore please activate your plugins one by one and see which one caused this. Let me know!
Thanks!
Well… nothing suddenly “happens” on its own.
Good idea to
a) check to see if something got updated
b) check to see if something being inserted in page from plugin is breaking pages (try turning off plugins to see if something doing that)
c) try rolling back to last version if you updated something — again, the theme cannot magically break by itself
d) did you try checking a post with console (F12 in Chrome) for errors?
Are you using a custom template?
Since the html is only loading logo on IE, and nothing on Chrome, it looks like something is “bad” right at start of page loading.
This can be malformed custom CSS, malformed custom JS, inserted in head; it can be a bad bit of something inserted into head by a plugin, etc.
No idea beyond the above items.
TagDiv folk likely will have better answer, but basically the only way for something to “suddenly” stop working (as per past posts on your site issues), is for you to have changed something, or a plugin to suddenly have changed something. This is why “auto updates” are also a bad idea in case something doesn’t work with something else.
You might also try clearing your site cache if using plugin, or turn that off, if it got corrupted or isn’t house cleaning properly.
Clear your caching plugin on your server; refresh your CDN if using one to expire old content and recapture current content (RTFM for how to use those tools if you have them).
Clear your browser cache (see help for web browser).
If it works one place on one PC/Mac, and then doesn’t work on another; that could be the local caching on that particular PC/Mac … sometimes the F5 key pressed can reload, but some like Chrome you need to go to the expiration settings to clear history/cache. Good thing to learn if you’re not already familiar with that.
If those were totally wrong answers … sorry about that 🙂
Ok. Fixed it.
What had happened was when I asked how to prevent the logo from loading in the middle first then loads to the left I was told to edit the css file
Also you have to change the css code in style.css file as the default style is loading first and because of the cascading property of the css style appears the delay you have noticed. So try to remove this code – http://screencast.com/t/77pQNXhaN then clear cache and see if it works.
Please note that this change will affect also other headers so if you change the header style revert this change.
I didn’t want to change the original file so I copied the style.css over to the theme folder and made the change. What would be the correct way of changing this without changing the original file?
